Iowa native from Eastern Iowa to be honored with induction into U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame
Eastern Iowa native Peggy Whitson is set to be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2020. Whitson, who was born and raised in Mount Ayr, Iowa, has a distinguished career as an astronaut and is being recognized for her significant contributions to the field of space exploration.
Whitson’s journey to becoming an astronaut began at Iowa Wesleyan College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. She went on to obtain a Doctorate in Biochemistry from Rice University before joining NASA in 1989.
Throughout her career, Whitson has logged an impressive 665 days in space, making her the female astronaut with the most cumulative time in space. She has participated in three long-duration missions aboard the International Space Station, including serving as the station’s first female commander.
