Okay, so I’m trying to figure out the absolute bare minimum when it comes to dental hygiene. I’m…let’s just say I’m really, really pressed for time lately. Like, showering is a luxury I only get every other day. So, flossing, mouthwash, all that extra stuff? Forget about it.
My question is: if I only do one thing, what should it be? And WHY? Is it really okay to just brush my teeth? What are the worst things that will happen if I don’t floss or use mouthwash? I’m mostly concerned about cavities and, like, my breath smelling terrible. Also, how long should I at least brush for? 30 seconds? A minute? Two? And does it matter what kind of toothpaste I use if I’m only brushing? Like, is there a special toothpaste that will make up for not doing the other stuff?
Answer
Okay.
-
Gather Supplies: Obtain a toothbrush (preferably with soft bristles), fluoride toothpaste, and a glass of water. Consider using dental floss or interdental brushes as well.
-
Wet Toothbrush: Moisten the toothbrush with water.
-
Apply Toothpaste: Squeeze a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste onto the toothbrush bristles.
-
Position Toothbrush: Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
-
Brush Gently: Use gentle, short, back-and-forth strokes to clean the outer surfaces of your teeth. Avoid applying too much pressure to prevent gum recession or enamel damage.
-
Clean Inner Surfaces: Tilt the toothbrush vertically and use the same gentle strokes to clean the inner surfaces of your teeth.
-
Brush Chewing Surfaces: Brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
-
Clean Tongue: Gently brush your tongue from back to front to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
-
Rinse Toothbrush: Rinse the toothbrush thoroughly with water to remove toothpaste and debris.
-
Rinse Mouth: Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water, making sure to swish the water around to remove any remaining toothpaste or debris.
-
Spit: Spit out the water into a sink.
-
Inspect: Check your teeth in a mirror to ensure you have cleaned all surfaces.
-
Clean Toothbrush (Again): Rinse the toothbrush again.
-
Store Toothbrush: Store the toothbrush upright in a dry, open-air location. Avoid storing it in a closed container, as this can encourage bacterial growth.
-
Time: Brush for at least two minutes, using a timer if needed.
- Frequency: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally after meals.
